The Kingdom of Survival

"The worst prison is ignorance."

The Kingdom of Survival explores modern skepticism in America, challenges the status quo and uncovers provocative links between survivalist philosophy, ecumenical spirituality, radical political theory, and outlaw culture. The audience is invited into a thoughtful conversation with the likes of Prof. Noam Chomsky, Dr. Mark Mirabello, Ramsey Kanaan, and the riveting final interview with beloved author, Joe Bageant. These unique thought leaders cast a rare shadow of doubt over our most blindly accepted American traditions.

Resilience

"A story of separation, family betrayal and reunion."

Resilience follows a Korean birth mother and her American son as they reunite and attempt to build a relationship after 30 years apart. Unable to communicate with each other, and amidst cultural clashes, the film follows mother and son as they struggle to become a family again.

Land

"Pack your sunscreen...grab your gun."

*Official Selection HotDocs Documentary Film Festival
*Official Selection Santa Barbara Int'l Film Festival

The year is 2006. Nicaragua is the new land of opportunity. Newspapers and magazines hail it as "The New Cancun" and "The Next Florida." Three naive Americans recklessly seize this golden opportunity and set up shop. They construct tourist resorts offering a "discounted" tropical paradise. What they don't know is that their cheap manual labor is about to run out. The natives become restless when they soon see what is truly happening; modern-day imperialism. Meanwhile, former revolutionary leader Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas sweep back to power causing even more political unrest. Dreams of free-spending vacationers and pool-side margaritas give way to death threats and armed assaults. LAND is an updated tale of the Wild West where the cowboys have been replaced by developers and the "Indians" are now the fed up native Nicaraguans. Grab your guns.

New Video and 7th Art Releasing acquire THE SWELL SEASON from XYZ Films

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tribeca Film Festival Documentary about Oscar®-Winning Singer-Songwriter Duo to Premiere in Theaters Fall 2011; on VOD, Digital and DVD in 2012

New York, NY – June 15, 2011 – 7th Art Releasing and New Video announced today the acquisition of THE SWELL SEASON from XYZ Films, directed by Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins and Carlo Mirabella-Davis, for platform release across theatrical, Cable VOD, Digital, DVD and TV. Following a multi-market theatrical release by 7th Art slated for the fall of 2011, New Video will release on Cable VOD, Digital and DVD in the U.S. through its Docurama Films brand. The split rights deal was negotiated by VP of Acquisitions Mark Kashden on behalf of New Video, by Udy Epstein on behalf of 7th Art, and by Nate Bolotin and Aram Tertzakian for XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.

“Equal parts love story and road show, THE SWELL SEASON seamlessly transitions from the storybook romance of Once to the real-life pressures and heartbreak that can come from sudden fame,” said Kashden. “As the film gains accolades on the festival front, we’re excited to support its release to a wider audience.”

"THE SWELL SEASON is an uncompromising intimate documentary about Glen and Markéta, the incredible music that they make together and their heartbreaking romance,” added 7th Art’s Epstein. “Once upon a time there was a Swell Season and 7th Art is thrilled to bring its story to audiences." "THE SWELL SEASON was years in the making, so we're thrilled to bring it out into the world with this unique partnership,” said directors August-Perna, Dapkins and Mirabella-Davis. XYZ has devised a collaboration between two great distributors, 7th Art and New Video, to release the film in a truly innovative way. With this step, THE SWELL SEASON is gaining momentum to reach an ever wider audience."

A 2011 Tribeca Film Festival premiere, THE SWELL SEASON follows singer-songwriter duo, Glen Hansard (The Commitments) and Markéta Irglová, who were catapulted into the spotlight when they won the 2007 Oscar® for Best Original Song (“Falling Slowly”). Previous to the Once soundtrack, which achieved #7 on the SoundScan album charts and the #1 spot on iTunes, the collaborators co-produced a critically acclaimed album in 2006 titled “The Swell Season,” followed by “Strict Joy” in 2009, the tour for which serves as the centerpiece of the film. As reviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, the film “makes a bruised-but-sweet flip side to Once’s dreamy love song.” THE SWELL SEASON opens the 2011 AFI-SilverDocs Film Festival on June 20.

The circumcision debate in the news

With all the debate of circumcision in the media we thought we would take the opportunity to remind everybody of our hilarious film about Yisrael Campbell's triple-conversion from Catholicism to Judaism in CIRCUMCISE ME: THE COMEDY OF YISRAEL CAMPBELL.

Born Chris Campbell, the son of an ex-nun and a Catholic schoolteacher, he converted to Judaism not once, but three times - Reform, Conservative and Orthodox. His spiritual journey began as a drug-drenched teenager in Philadelphia and ended in Jerusalem among the suicide bombs of the Palestinian intifada. So what's to laugh about? It's the way he tells it. CIRCUMCISE ME is a hilarious, searching and moving story of one man's quest for spiritual enlightenment against the bewildering backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The First Movie and Love During Wartime selected to Silverdocs 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The First Movie and Love During Wartime selected to Silverdocs 2011

Los Angeles, CA (May 27th, 2011) – 7th Art Releasing announced today, that their films, THE FIRST MOVIE and LOVE DURING WARTIME, have been selected to screen at the 9th Annual AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival.

THE FIRST MOVIE, which screened this year at SXSW Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival and Palm Springs Film Festival, is a tribute to the power of the cinema and the imaginative resilience of children. When filmmaker Mark Cousins and his crew travel to a small Kurdish Village in Northern Iraq devastated by Saddam Hussein's regime, they discover children who have known nothing but war their entire lives and have never experienced the magic of cinema. Through these children, Cousins recalls his own childhood in Northern Ireland surrounded by the violence and war starting in the late 60s. The filmmakers sew together a movie screen from old sheets and set up a projector, instantly creating a movie theater that plays children's classics in the village center. But the real magic happens when the children receive camcorders and create their own movies filled with a child's wonder and boundless imagination.

LOVE DURING WARTIME follows Jasmin and Osama, newlyweds trying to build a life together against what look like impossible odds: She's Israeli, he's Palestinian. When their homelands turn their backs on them, the couple decides to live in exile. This tender tale of a love infiltrated by politics follows a real-life Romeo and Juliet on their odyssey from the Middle East through an inhospitable Europe. As their hopes rise and then fade with each bureaucratic hurdle, will their love survive? Gabriella Bier’s documentary LOVE DURING WARTIME made its North American premiere at Tribeca Film Festival 2011.

The 9th Annual Silverdocs Festival 2011 kicks off June 20 at the AFI Silver Theatre & Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.
