Synopsis

A look at the do-it-yourself world of underground music from the perspective of those who make it happen. Inspired by a quote from late director John Cassavetes, filmmaker Justin Mitchell documents ten underground bands making music in the wake of the "alternative" media explosion of the early nineties. Shot in black and white 16mm film in locations from Los Angeles to San Francisco to Berkeley to Olympia to Washington, D.C., SONGS includes performances and interviews with Sleater-Kinney, the Make-Up, Unwound, Further, Dub Narcotic Sound System and more.
