Summer in the Cage, A
Ben Selkow
60 minutes

In "A Summer in the Cage" filmmaker Ben Selkow chronicles his friend Sam's battle with manic-depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder. Over seven years, the film documents Sam as he suffers delusional manic episodes, battles paralyzing depressions, and tries to escape the legacy of his bipolar-afflicted father who when Sam was eight committed suicide. Through intimate footage, A Summer in the Cage shows the powerful emotional impact that the painful illness brings to Sam, his family, and all those who care about him, including the filmmaker. As Sam's journey unfolds and heading towards an explosive standoff, it becomes a unique tale of friendship and the ethical responsibilities of a documentary filmmaker. Featuring interviews with renowned Johns Hopkins University author and clinician Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison (also suffering from bipolar disorder) A Summer in the Cage puts a human face on an illness that affects millions of families around the world.
