Synopsis
This documentary follows the extraordinary journey of Genie Milgrom and her decades-long quest to uncover her Jewish lineage. Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Miami, Genie received a full Roman Catholic education from grade school through university. Yet throughout her life, she was burdened by a deep-rooted feeling that she did not belong in her Spanish Catholic environment.
Her story takes many unexpected turns as she makes the difficult decision to convert to Judaism—despite coming from a deeply traditional Catholic family of Spanish origin—and chooses an Orthodox path for her future.
As Genie delves deeper, her family and friends are shaken, while she becomes increasingly convinced that her ancestors were Jewish in the Iberian Peninsula centuries ago.
Her search for the ancestral “breadcrumbs” left behind leads her through medieval archives and across several European countries, as she works to untangle the web of secrecy her family had created to protect themselves during dark and dangerous times in Europe.
Together with her husband Michael, an Ashkenazi Jew of Romanian origin, Genie ultimately uncovers the truth of her heritage in this powerful and unforgettable film.
