Synopsis
AMNESIA combines the personal, political, and historical, tracing the horror of a pogrom committed against the Jewish residents of the Polish city of Kielce on the 4th of July 1946. This atrocity was committed by their neighbors, fellow Poles of Kielce. This film seeks to gain some perspective on the Kielce Pogrom, an event that has been all but scrubbed from the history of Poland. The filmmaker searches for answers, even reflecting on his own family’s complicity (and perhaps more) in the event. Given the current political climate in 21st century Poland, this film is fiercely relevant today, as we must confront and combat the legacies of anti-Semitism in Europe and around the world.
Director
Jerzy Sladowski (Director and scriptwriter) is a member of the European Film Academy (EFA) and a graduate of Classical Philology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and Journalism at the Warsaw University. In 1982 Jerzy emigrated to Sweden and began collaboration with Swedish Television (SVT), the Swedish Film Institute, various Finish, Danish, German and Norwegian broadcasters, as well as Polish public broadcaster (TVP) and the Polish Film Institute (PISF)
Since his departure from Poland Jerzy successfully produced and directed over 50 films, mainly documentaries, from worldwide locations, with a primary focus on the human condition. People facing dramatic changes, fighting for survival, as well as individuals just trying to live a decent life in an increasingly hardening environment, are the heroes of most films.
