Synopsis
On October 7, 1985, the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked off the coast of Egypt by four members of the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF), triggering a three-day international crisis. The ordeal ended with the murder of American passenger Leon Klinghoffer, a dramatic armed standoff between U.S. and Italian forces, and a diplomatic confrontation that reshaped U.S. counterterrorism policy and influenced the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Featuring firsthand accounts from crew members, negotiators, officials, and one of the hijackers, this documentary reveals the untold story behind one of the most consequential acts of international terrorism of the 20th century.
Director
Simone Manetti (born 1978, Livorno, Italy) is an Italian director and film editor. A graduate of Italy’s National Film School, he began his career editing films for acclaimed director Paolo Virzì, including The First Beautiful Thing (2010), earning nominations for Italy’s David di Donatello and Silver Ribbon Awards.
Manetti made his directorial debut with Goodbye Darling, I’m Off to Fight (2016), followed by I’m in Love with Pippa Bacca (2019), Il Forteto (2020), Marta, Il Delitto della Sapienza (2021), and the 2024 productions The Young Berlusconi, The Giarre Murders, and Achille Lauro: The Terror Cruise.
